Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a statutory body under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS), 2006 is the primary law for regulation of food products. This act also sets up the formulation and enforcement of food safety standards in India. The FSSAI appoints food safety authorities on the state level.
The FSSAI functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.The main aim of FSSAI is to:
1. Lay down science-based standards for articles of food
2. To regulate manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food
3. To facilitate food safety

Required documents for FSSAI Registration:
. Photo Identity of Promoters of the Food Business
. Declaration Form
. Authority Letter
. Proof of possession of premises (Rental Agreement / Utility Bill)
. Partnership Deed / Certificate of Incorporation / Articles of Association / Memorandum of Association
. List of food products manufactures or processed or stored
. Food safety management system plan
. Signed and Completed Form-B

File your FSSAI License application along with other declarations that are required to be filed to the local FBO.

Issue the FSSAI Registration or License typically with a validity of 1 or 2 years.

The mandate assigned to the Food Authority is (i) laying down science based standards for articles of food (ii) to regulate manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food (iii) to facilitate food safety.

The representative of the consumer organizations are members of the Food Authorities and Central Advisory Committee. The consumer may analyze the samples of food on payment of fees. The in case of injury of death of consumer there is a provision for compensation to the consumer.

All sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 have been notified by Government of India except the provisions relating to the genetically engineered or modified food in section 22.

The mandate of Food Authority is laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Food Authority is in the process of formulating and finalizing the various regulations/guidelines in terms of provisions under the Act to ensure the quality and safety of food and giving effect to the mandate of the Food Authority.
