FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India which is an organization that monitors and governs the food business in India. It ensures the food products undergo quality checks thereby curtailing the food adulteration and sale of sub-standard products.
Every food business operator involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License. FSSAI Registration is different from FSSAI License in the sense that depending on the size and nature of the business, FBO should obtain the necessary registration or license.It is a 14-digit registration or a license number which is printed on all the food packages.
Types of FSSAI License:
FSSAI Basic registration
Every business unit or startup having annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs can obtain basic registration only. However, Basic registration can be upgraded to state license as the sales graph of business increases.
FSSAI State license
FSSAI state license must be obtained by the mid-sized companies which have annual turnover between Rs.12-20 crores.
FSSAI Central license
Every food business supplying his food items at the government offices or import / export food products is mandatorily required to obtain this license. Moreover, the large businesses with annual turnover above Rs.20 crores are also required to acquire this license.
Submit documents required
File your FSSAI License application along with other declarations that are required to be filed to the local FBO.
Issue the FSSAI Registration or License typically with a validity of 1 or 2 years.
As for the Food Security Act, 2006 passed by Parliament its mandatory for all the products that are edible must be registered and obtain license under the FSSAI even though it's of small or medium scale.
Transfer of FSSAI License. In case of death of the FSSAI license holder, the FSSAI license can be transferred to the legal representative or any family member of the deceased holder. The legal representative or the family member must apply to the concerned Authority to transfer the license in his/her favor.
