Income Tax Return is the form in when assessee files information about his Income and tax thereon to Income Tax Department. Various forms are ITR 1, ITR 2, ITR 3, ITR 4, ITR 5, ITR 6 and ITR 7. When you file a belated return, you are not allowed to carry forward certain losses.

The Income Tax Act, 1961, and the Income Tax Rules, 1962, obligates citizens to file returns with the Income Tax Department at the end of every financial year. These returns should be filed before the specified due date. Every Income Tax Return Form is applicable to a certain section of the Assesse Only those Forms which are filed by the eligible Assesse are processed by the Income Tax Department of India. It is therefore imperative to know which particular form is appropriate in each case. Income Tax Return Forms vary depending on the criteria of the source of income of the Assessee and the category of the Assessee.

Income Tax Return Due Date: Generally, the due date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)/ Individuals/ AOP (Association of Persons)/ BOI (Body of Individuals) is 31st July of the next Financial Year. For example – The ITR due date for Financial Year 2016-17 would be 31st July, 2017.

Filing returns is a sign you are responsible. The government mandates that individuals who earn a specified amount of annual income must file a tax return within a pre-determined due date. The tax as calculated must be paid by the individual. Failure to pay tax will invite penalties from the Income Tax Department.

Income Tax Return Filing for NRIs. NRI or not, any individual whose income exceeds Rs. 2.5 lakhs (for FY 2017-18) is required to file an income tax return in India.

The filing deadline to submit 2017 tax returns is Tuesday, April 17, 2018, rather than the traditional April 15 date.
